The goal of  Hypersonic Materials Manufacturing Initiative FOA is to solicit proposals to address basic research needs for processing science of hypersonic materials that can lead to reliable manufacturing. Material types can include ceramic matrix composites, thermal protection systems, ultra-high temperature ceramics, carbon-based composites, and coated materials including metals. As such, arriving at a reliable, consistent, repeatable and achievable manufacturing process presents challenges. The materials community is in need of a scientific, physics-based understanding of each step in the manufacturing process, individually and collectively, to have confidence in material performance at manufacturing scale. The resulting research supported by this FOA should provide a basic science approach to understand critical mechanisms during the manufacturing approach that ultimately affect material performance.
