AHA Programs with October 2018 deadlines: Collaborative Sciences Award; Career Development Award; Established Investigator Award; Innovative Project Award – deadlines depend on program

The American Heart Association AHA is accepting applications for programs listed below with October 2018 deadlines. Applicants must complete their applications within the AHA Grants@Heart system and, once finished, click on the Submit to Grants Officer option; this will release the application to the UI Division of Sponsored Programs DSP for review and submission to AHA.

 

In order for DSP to do its part, University of Iowa applicants must be sure to: 
a) Select John Keller as Grant Officer where prompted within the application form; and
b) Complete the UI Routing Form/process to secure departmental and collegiate approvals at least five business days before the AHA submission deadline.

NEW Requirement:  All Applicants must have AHA Professional Membership.
Effective with deadlines after June 1, 2018, each applicant, including a Predoctoral or Postdoctoral Fellowship applicant, must be an
AHA Professional Member. Applicants may join or renew membership via the Grants@Heart application site. You may also join or renew by phoning the AHA at 301-223-2307 or 800-787-8984. Membership processing takes 3-5 days. Please do not wait until the application deadline to renew or join. For all new awards, awardees must maintain AHA Professional Membership for the entire term of funding. AHA awardees may use their AHA funding to pay AHA membership dues.

Some AHA programs permit resubmission of the same or similar application (similar aims) as one submitted previously, up to three times (the original plus two resubmissions).  The resubmission option is available for the Collaborative Sciences Award and the Career Development Award (among programs listed below with Autumn 2018 deadlines).

 

Collaborative Sciences Award

Fosters innovative collaborative approaches to research projects that propose novel pairings of investigators from at least two broadly disparate disciplines. The proposal must focus on the collaborative relationship, such that the scientific objectives could not be achieved without the efforts of at least two co-principal investigators and their respective disciplines.
The Required Letter of Intent LOI must be submitted to your institution’s Grants Officer.

Career Development Award

Supports highly promising healthcare and academic professionals, in the early years of their first professional appointment, to explore innovative questions or pilot studies that will provide preliminary data and training necessary to assure the applicant’s future success as a research scientist in the field of cardiovascular and stroke research.
Career StageMust hold a faculty/staff position up to and including the rank of assistant professor (or equivalent). No more than four years may have elapsed since the first faculty/staff appointment (after receipt of doctoral degree) at the assistant professor level or equivalent.

Established Investigator Award

Supports mid-career investigators with unusual promise and an established record of accomplishments; candidates have a demonstrated commitment to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular science as indicated by prior publication history and scientific accomplishments. A candidate's career is expected to be in a rapid growth phase.
Career Stage: Intermediate level or recognized investigator – associate professor or equivalent, professor or equivalent. Applicants are expected to be independent investigators.
The Required Letter of Intent LOI must be submitted to your institution’s Grants Officer.

Innovative Project Award

The IPA funds ideas that may introduce new paradigms, challenge current paradigms, look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other uniquely creative qualities. Preliminary data is not required and not accepted as part of the proposal, however, a solid rationale for the work must be provided.
Career Stage: This program places no limit on eligibility based on career stage, academic rank or discipline.

Transformational Project Award

Represents the second phase of a new idea; proposals should include preliminary data. Proposed work should be the next logical step of previous work and should indicate a high probability of revealing new avenues of investigation.
