This announcement provides funds to a successful recipient to support the National Program of Cancer Registries’ (NPCR) to enhance national cancer data and statistics in order to help public health professionals understand and address the nation’s cancer burden. Cancer registrars’ knowledge of the cancer disease process and data standards necessary to capture registry information represent fundamental skill sets and competencies that help create cancer data experts who are essential to the operation of successful registries. This cooperative agreement will support continuing education requirements, strengthen the workforce, and enhance dissemination of the cancer data.
The recipient will implement the following strategies and accompanying activities:
1) Enhance the development and implementation of educational infrastructure for cancer registry professionals;
2) Enhance utilization of existing cancer surveillance data via technology, training and workforce development resources; and
3) Modernize technology for increased utilization of existing cancer registries data systems technology.
