The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research in natal environments of fishes in the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers using otolith microchemistry.

Research Objectives:

  • Determine if fish populations in the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers are produced locally or from distant sources, and from the mainstem of in tributaries.
  • Evaluate whether there are source locations or reaches that are important for production of multiple fish species, and, conversely, if there are locations or reaches of poor habitat quality that act as sinks for multiple fish species.
