Leo Baeck Institute supports new research on German-Jewish culture and history through the following fellowships. Ph.D. candidates and academics working on topics related to the German-Jewish community in a variety of disciplines are encouraged to apply. For questions about the fellowship programs, contact Dr. Frank Mecklenburg, Director of Research.
The Baumgardt Fellowship provides grants of up to $7,500 for Ph.D. candidates working on topics such as ethics, Wissenschaft des Judentums, or the modern intellectual history of German Jews.
The Westheimer Fellowship provides personal grants of $25,000 to pre-tenure scholars in the field of German-Jewish History.
LBI and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provide financial support to American doctoral students for dissertation research and to academics for the preparation of a scholarly essay or book.
The Ismar Elbogen Scholarship of the Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Scholarship Fund (ELES) and the Leo Baeck Institute supports a research stay of 6–12 months at the Center for Jewish History in New York.
