Dear University of Iowa Directors of Graduate Studies,

This year’s Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Program http://www2.ed.gov/programs/iegpsddrap/applicant.html is now open. The internal submission deadline is Monday, June 18, 2018. The Fulbright-Hays fellowship provides opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and/or area studies (e.g., geography, history, political science.) The program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States. Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the United States or permanent residents of the United States.

Applications will be considered only for research projects that focus on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, East Central Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories). Please note that projects focused on Western Europe are not eligible.

Estimated range of fellowship awards to individual applicants will be $15,000 - $60,000, with the estimated average size of fellowship awards being $37,452. An estimated 91 awards will be given for FY2018. The institutional project period is 18 months, beginning October 1, 2018. Students may request funding for a period of no less than six months and no more than 12 months.

Individual applicants must apply through the University of Iowa and must follow campus application instructions; the UI submits a combined application which contains all of the individual student grant applications and administers the fellowships to individual awardees. Therefore it is critical that all applications are received by the Division of Sponsored Programs no later than Monday, June 18, 2018. Applicants should contact Mary Blackwood (mary-blackwood@uiowa.edu) as soon as they know they will apply to discuss the submission process.

For optional review of application materials and further questions, UIowa applicants are asked to please contact grad-success@uiowa.edu or karen-wachsmuth@uiowa.edu. (At least one feedback review session is required to be eligible for the Graduate College’s $500 Fellowship Incentive Program award.)
