This program element solicits proposals for studies that use past and future GEDI data to address scientific questions in terrestrial ecology, carbon cycle science, biodiversity, 25 m A.60-2 and interactions of the biosphere with the atmosphere and hydrosphere. However, proposers are strongly encouraged to use GEDI data in combination with other spacebased, airborne, and surface observations. Selected principal investigators will become members of the Competed GEDI Science Team.

Background:
NASA launched the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) instrument to the International Space Station (ISS) in December 2018 and GEDI’s science data collection phase began in April 2019. After four years of data collection, GEDI was removed from its operational site on the ISS’s Japanese Experiment Module – Exposed Facility (JEMEF) on March 16, 2023, and was placed in storage for a period of 13 to 18 months. NASA plans to reinstall GEDI at its original JEM-EF site sometime between April and September 2024. Following this reinstallation, GEDI is expected to resume normal science measurements after a 60-day commissioning period. GEDI is a full-waveform lidar instrument that makes detailed measurements of the 3-dimensional (3-D) structure of the Earth’s forests and land surface.
