The opioid epidemic has become one of the most persistent epidemics in the United States, with nearly one million accidental drug overdose deaths, resulting in more than one fatal overdose death every five minutes. Most of these overdoses are opioidrelated and, since 2013, are primarily the result of illicitly manufactured fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin. Recent trends show increased overdose rates among high school age youth.

While extensive work has been done to increase treatment capacity, there remains a significant burden on state and local law enforcement, substance use treatment delivery systems, mental health systems, child welfare and foster care, and the juvenile justice system.

Through this program, OJJDP will support states and communities to develop coordinated responses to opioid and other substance use-related challenges that impact youth and community safety. Funding may be used to support programs and services to youth and families impacted by both opioids and other substance use disorders.
