The goal of the RFAP is to provide research experience to enhance an eligible postdoctoral applicant’s personal scientific stature and credentials within the scientific community. It provides an opportunity for the applicant to conduct concentrated basic, translational or clinical research under the mentorship of a Shriners scientific or medical staff member. The RFAP is not intended to fulfill an advanced degree research requirement, clinical fellowship or residency requirement. The RFAP is often the final element of the applicant’s training toward an independent investigator career. An RFAP applicant applying for a clinical RFAP requires mentorship by a Shriners appointed physician who signs off on the application and the human study consent.
