New Directions ND Grants - designed as a source of funds for new concepts and new projects for the lead PI and his/her research group. The lead principal investigator must demonstrate that this is an entirely new research direction from what the lead principal investigator has done to date.

Doctoral New Investigator (DNI) Grants - provide start-up funding for scientists and engineers in the United States who are within the first three years of their first academic appointment at the level of Assistant Professor or the equivalent.

Undergraduate Research (UR) Grants - Eligibility for a UR grant requires that a PI is in a department without a doctoral program, and that the students receiving stipends for the work to be done are undergraduates (M.S.-level students can also be supported only if one or more undergraduates are also supported from this grant).
